Play...Pause...SGM^®: Animations and Narrative for Social and Language Learning

Animations, video clips and movies are incredibly engaging for children and adults of all ages! Using materials that “move” can be especially powerful when working with children who struggle with processing the social intentions behind movement — so important for understanding social interactions at home and in school. Being able to “press pause” to take time to talk about and process narrative aspects like characters’ emotions, thoughts, and perspectives can be part of an effective technique — and is very doable in a distance learning setting as well.

“It’s Not a Story Anymore!: Using Story Grammar Marker^® for Expository Informational Text” — Webinar May 2017

This FREE webinar will share how the narrative icons of Story Grammar Marker^® and Braidy the StoryBraid^® can be applied to Expository Text Structures shown in MindWing’s ThemeMaker^® tool. In honor of Better Hearing and Speech Month, Maryellen Rooney Moreau will present the ThemeMaker^® methodology that she first published in 1998. It is necessary now, more than ever, to teach these expository text structures in order to: prevent the “4th (and 3rd!!) grade slump,” focus on “Argument” in the curriculum as well as adhere to the CCSS. Expository or information text is found in content area text such as: science, social studies, in current events, true fact books, text books, biographies, magazines, cookbooks, and websites.

The 7 primary expository text structures are: description, list, sequence, cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast, argument/opinion/persuasion. Using informational texts and other age-appropriate resources the presenter will demonstrate the use of expository text structures for comprehension, writing and thinking. Even from very young age, expository text is essential for learning.
