Animations, video clips and movies are incredibly engaging for children and adults of all ages! Using materials that “move” can be especially powerful when working with children who struggle with processing the social intentions behind movement — so important for understanding social interactions at home and in school. Being able to “press pause” to take time to talk about and process narrative aspects like characters’ emotions, thoughts, and perspectives can be part of an effective technique — and is very doable in a distance learning setting as well.

This FREE webinar will share how the narrative icons of Story Grammar Marker® and Braidy the StoryBraid® can be applied to Expository Text Structures shown in MindWing’s ThemeMaker® tool. In honor of Better Hearing and Speech Month, Maryellen Rooney Moreau will present the ThemeMaker® methodology that she first published in 1998. It is necessary now, more than ever, to teach these expository text structures in order to: prevent the “4th (and 3rd!!) grade slump,” focus on “Argument” in the curriculum as well as adhere to the CCSS. Expository or information text is found in content area text such as: science, social studies, in current events, true fact books, text books, biographies, magazines, cookbooks, and websites.
The 7 primary expository text structures are: description, list, sequence, cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast, argument/opinion/persuasion. Using informational texts and other age-appropriate resources the presenter will demonstrate the use of expository text structures for comprehension, writing and thinking. Even from very young age, expository text is essential for learning. Examples are: describing a geographical place, listing supplies for an art project, sequencing a science experiment, for driving/walking directions or for a recipe, discussing cause/effect for a science-related topic, solving problems in real life situations or for understanding problems in history and current events, comparing/contrasting real life, historic or scientific information, developing an opinion and being able to argue a point. — Download Webinar Handout • “My Research” Cut-and-Fold Booklet • Text Structure Flow Chart • Certificate of Attendance • ThemeMaker® References
In support of Autism Awareness Month, Maryellen Rooney Moreau, creator or Story Grammar Marker® will share in this webinar how the SGM® can be used with children along the Autism Spectrum who have social communication disorders. “‘Story-Based Intervention’” was cited as one of eleven established treatments for autism.” — Findings and Conclusions Report, National Standards Project, United States National Autism Center
The “narrative” (story) is the human mode of thought and is an integral part of social communication; it is how we share our ideas, plans, dreams, memories and beliefs in social interaction at school, home or work. The Story Grammar Marker® provides a concrete representation of the narrative episode. Narrative development, using the Story Grammar Marker® methodology with the Critical Thinking Triangle®, can help children with social communication, developmental or learning challenges to: tell their “story,” take perspective, develop Theory of Mind, become critical thinkers, build Central Coherence, solve problems, initiate conversation to establish relationships, recognize feelings through verbal and nonverbal cues, infer, make plans and improve writing with cohesion. Children with ASD often have trouble expressing personal event narratives as well as using feeling/thinking/planning words. — Download Webinar Slides • Download Webinar Handout
