SGM Certification Module 1 is a THREE-day (3-day) intensive training held at MindWing’s Springfield, MA location. It is for professionals who have already been using this approach and who have previously attended training with Maryellen Rooney Moreau and wish to increase their level of expertise in using MindWing’s Approach and who want to train directly with Maryellen Rooney Moreau, creator of the Story Grammar Marker®. This Certification will give participants the opportunity to use the methodology at an expert level with their students and clients. It will also give them the tools to mentor and in-service (within certain in-servicing parameters designated by MindWing Concepts, Inc.) within a school district, private practice or organization on the topic of the foundations of MindWing Concepts’ methodology.
Days one and two are designed as a roundtable, think-tank-type workshop. This certification module will cover research, specific areas of interest, techniques, and aspects of MindWing’s approach that go beyond a workshop. Maryellen will cover this Approach from early childhood (Braidy®) to elementary (SGM®), writing (Talk to Write, Write to LearnTM), expository text (ThemeMaker®) at the middle school level. It will also cover MindWing’s focus on Autism and social communication as well as make connections to the Common Core State Standards, text complexity, and data collection.
On day three Sean J. Sweeney, M.S., M.Ed., CCC-SLP, will join Maryellen to focus on integrating technology tools with the 7 Stages of Narrative Development and with 7 Expository Text structures: description, list, sequence, cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast and persuasion/argument. Sean will combine Apps, Story Grammar Marker® & ThemeMaker® tools, children’s literature, expository selections and manipulatives as an engaging way to improve students’ oral expression, social communication, critical thinking, writing, and comprehension. Many Apps will be discussed, including the SGM® iPad App. For participants, this day will solidify progression of the stages and the trajectory of expository text structures as well as explores creative ways to elicit and develop oral language.
The major focus of all 3 days will be how to implement the methodology within any existing program and how to use MindWing’s approach with students—regardless of age, ability or culture, to provide instruction and intervention, while supporting the curriculum goals and standards and use data and progress monitoring.
