Braidy® in Pre-K Master Class

Story Language for Play, SEL, & Problem Solving

Braidy Poster imageBraidy® in Pre-K Master Cass: Story Language for Play, SEL, & Problem-Solving—a virtual workshop via Zoom Meeting! For the first time ever, we are offering a “Narrative Development with Braidy®” workshop SPECIFICALLY for people working with Pre-School Aged children. If you are a teacher, SLP, specialist, or daycare provider in a public or private Pre-K classroom, a Home-Based Child Care, an Early Childhood Center, a Head Start/Early Head Start, or a YMCA Preschool, this workshop is for YOU! Braidy® gives you a concrete way to help every child to tell their own story. The ability to communicate “what happened” and share their feelings, thoughts, and plans impacts children’s social, emotional, and academic development, their access to equitable education, and their overall well-being. In Pre-K, exposure to Story Language is critical, since, as the grades progress, story language is embedded in all areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Your modeling of narrative language within play scenarios, routines, and transitions provides a foundation for literacy –at the same time improving communication, thinking, ability to see the big picture, executive functions, and perspective taking.

Master Class Description

Braidy Manual imageThe Braidy the StoryBraid® Approach supports all areas of oral language development: Pragmatics, Sounds, Words and Vocabulary, Sentences and Questions, and provides a much-needed pathway to DISCOURSE (stories, information, and conversation).

Elements of story language also play an important role in developing the Social Emotional Learning core competencies as delineated by CASEL.org: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

Modeling story language with Braidy® during symbolic play, role-playing, and pretend play helps children take perspective, increases literate language, and builds vocabulary. Many children are coming to PRE-K with diagnosed or undiagnosed learning difficulties as well as having experienced trauma or ACEs, which can diminish concentration, memory, and the ability to organize and express their thoughts. Using Braidy® to talk about feelings, thoughts, and plans is integral to addressing these difficulties in real time in the classroom as issues arise. Braidy® assists young children in working toward understanding their own behaviors and resolving conflicts with peers.

The presenters will demonstrate using Braidy® with children’s literature selections, dramatic play, centers, routines, transitions, circle time, setting expectations, problem-solving, and perspective-taking.
