Appropriate for Grades PreK - Grade 1
Included: Braidy the StoryBraid® Manual (Value $75)

This intensive teaches MindWing’s hands-on approach for fostering the oral language development necessary for young children’s progress and achievement in talk, listening comprehension, writing/drawing, play, critical thinking and social-emotional growth. Using Braidy the StoryBraid® with children’s literature, this developmental approach can be used during Read Alouds & Think Alouds to scaffold storytelling by facilitating sequencing and generating “Wh” questions. It helps to increase awareness of feelings, motivations & plans of characters as well as body language, facial expressions & tone of voice.  Participants will also learn how to use Braidy®’s methodology as a positive behavioral support, for transitions & routines in the classroom, perspective-taking and conflict resolution. Braidy® provides a child-friendly, concrete representation of the narrative episode (stories) and can be used for expository text structures of description, list, sequence, cause/effect and problem solving in real life and in informational books. Participants will work with both narrative development and expository text using Braidy® tools.

The “Core” of the Core – Supporting Common Core State Standards Using Story Grammar Marker® & Related Methodology

Appropriate for Elementary Grades
Included: BOOK- The “Core” of the Core – Supporting Common Core State Standards Using Story Grammar Marker® & Related Methodology (Value $55.95)

This intensive will focus on how to integrate narrative and expository text using MindWing’s methodology to support specific aspects of the Common Core State Standards. The Story Grammar Marker®, ThemeMaker® and related methodology can be used to support speaking, listening, reading, writing and thinking. In this intensive, participants will learn how to help students develop “communicative competence” fundamental to the Common Core State Standards which includes the ability to:

The link between literacy and language development is at the “discourse” level of language which is made up of narration, conversation and exposition (the SGM® and ThemeMaker® are vehicles for these components). In order for students to meet the requirements of the Common Core State Standards, the development of speaking and listening skills – particularly at the discourse level - is essential.

Think, Communicate and Learn with Story Grammar Marker®

Appropriate for Grades 2-5
Included: Story Grammar Marker® Manual (Value $75)

The central focus of this intensive is the Story Grammar Marker® which has been used to help children to think, communicate and learn since 1991. The SGM® methodology explicitly delineates 7 stages of narrative development in iconic form and includes the literate language features (“story sparkle”) that accompany these stages that serve to advance narrative thought and expression. In this intensive, participants will use this methodology with children’s literature to analyze narrative macrostructure & microstructure. Through activities related to story structure, perspective-taking and making connections, participants will learn how to improve oral language development, writing, comprehension and social communication. The Critical Thinking Triangle® (CTT®), which is a concrete representation of how we think, feel and plan (often a missing link in traditional story maps and graphic organizers) helps students share thoughts, stories and ideas in social interaction and in writing at school (or work). It is also the thought process behind Theory of Mind and problem solving. The CTT® provides a hands-on way of thinking about and communicating: the “main idea” of the story, the “perspective” in the social situation and the “voice” in written expression. Participants will also explore assessment, data collection and progress monitoring measures for informing instruction for narrative intervention.

Integrating Technology Tools with Braidy, The Storybraid®, SGM® and ThemeMaker®

Appropriate for elementary grades
Included: FREE SGM® Ipad App

This intensive workshop will show you how to select and integrate apps for iPad with MindWing’s methodology. The presenters will provide in-depth work with the Narrative Developmental Sequence (Stages 1-5) from the descriptive level (stage 1) of character and setting all the way through to the complete episode (stage 5) of a story. Narrative discourse is complex, involving thinking, language and social communication simultaneously. Narrative intervention using picture books, Story Grammar Marker® maps and MindWing’s low-tech manipulatives have been very effective in improving student outcomes. Apps can also serve as part of a narrative intervention program, as they present visual, interactive and creative contexts through which students can understand and form stories. Participants will learn to examine app features to select apps that scaffold narrative language development through intervention using Apps, in conjunction with children’s literature, Story Grammar Marker® maps and manipulatives. Each Stage of Narrative Development will be discussed and Apps at each stage will be demonstrated using Apps such as: The SGM® App, Pic Collage, Buildo Rescue, Tellagami, Emotionary and Toontastic. The Narrative Developmental Sequence provides a framework for intervention in the areas of critical thinking, expression of stories and experiences, writing and social situations, and various apps can be utilized for each stage in context.

Along with the Stages of Narrative Development, corresponding expository text structures will also be examined. For example, Action Sequences involving character, setting and series of actions correspond with “Sequencing,” an expository text structure that can be explored in the context of curriculum content:  a timeline in social studies, a series of steps in a science experiment or simply following directions. The 7 expository text structures of description, list, sequence, cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast and persuasion/argument will be explored with Apps allowing students to interact with and visualize information, such as: Popplet, Educreations Interactive Whiteboard and Corkulous in conjunction with ThemeMaker™ maps and manipulatives.

Combining Apps, Story Grammar Marker® & ThemeMaker® tools, children’s literature, expository selections and manipulatives is an engaging way to improve students’ oral expression, social communication, writing and comprehension.
