Social-Emotional Learning

• This virtual workshop will teach you how to empower children to independently tell their stories, as well as to speak and write with cohesion, take perspective, comprehend, infer, think critically, have academic conversations, and solve problems.
• Attain these language and literacy goals by using quality children’s literature and focusing on discourse (specifically narrative development) while also incorporating pragmatics, phonology, syntax, and semantics into your therapy and instruction. Large bodies of research establish that early narrative “story language” skills predict—and contribute to—later academic achievement.
• Apply the Story Grammar Marker^® Approach, which has been used with millions of children for more than 29 years...
• to simultaneously address these foundational skills and the curricular content as well as social-emotional learning
• to master the concept of this hands-on, narrative development approach and ultimately help children develop the story language they need to think, communicate and learn.

Maryellen Rooney Moreau,
M.Ed. CCC-SLP

Maryellen designed the Story Grammar Marker^® Narrative Development Approach in 1991 and founded MindWing Concepts, Inc. She has been in the field of Speech-Language Pathology for 50 years and is Founder and President, she has authored 18 publications and created 45 hands-on tools and activities. She has also presented on the discourse level of language and its link to literacy, knowledge, and social-emotional learning to thousands of educators worldwide.

Linda M. Lafontaine,
M.A., CAGS, CCC-SLP 

Linda received her Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology in 1981 from the University of Maryland. In 2014 she received her CAGS from American International College as a Reading Specialist. Linda has practiced in many settings, including hospitals, and public and private schools. She is the former Principal of the Curtis Blake Day School of the Children’s Study Home, for students with dyslexia/LLD.

Learner Outcomes

Within the construct of Narrative (story) Development, after attending this presentation, learners will be able to:

• Help each child to independently tell their story (personal narrative)
• Target the building blocks of Narratives: Pragmatics (social communication), Phonology (letters, sound system for talking and decoding), Syntax (sentences, clauses, cohesion, and grammar), Semantics (vocabulary words, figurative language, and meanings), and Discourse (organizing sentences into conversation, stories, and information structures).
• Build narrative discourse to improve literacy skills (speaking, listening, reading comprehension, thinking, and writing).
• Promote social-emotional learning by talking about feelings, thoughts, and plans
• Apply the Critical Thinking Triangle^® to facilitate Perspective Taking, Critical Thinking, Theory of Mind, Inference, Problem Solving, and Academic Conversations.
• Create developmentally appropriate, activity-based lessons by analyzing and utilizing quality children’s literature.
• Explain the Strands of Oral Language and how Discourse links language to literacy.
• Describe the iconic base of the Story Grammar Marker^® and how this hands-on tool addresses academic and social-emotional learning goals in a variety of ways, and track and monitor the progress of students’ narrative development.

Participants must be present for the entire course and provide course feedback in order to receive ASHA CEUs. ASHA CEUs are awarded by the ASHA Continuing Education Board once eligibility requirements are met. No partial credit is provided. ASHA CE Provider approval and use of the Brand Block does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures. This workshop is for .06 ASHA CEUs.

Statement of Learning

The Story Grammar Marker^® Master Class will be provided online, LIVE by accessing a Zoom meeting link. The course will be recorded for future use by MindWing Concepts, Inc. The course content will include lectures, video(s), case study reviews, break-out group activities, group discussions, and question and answer sessions. Attendees’ microphones will be muted during the workshop. Questions may be posed by listeners by “raising their hand” (live) or using the “chat” feature on Zoom. Questions posed using the “chat” feature will be shared by the moderator with the presenter and addressed.

Assessment of Learning

These tools will be used to assess the degree to which course participants achieved the course's/session's learning outcomes:

• Completion of a project (assignment)
• Performance demonstrations (within break out sessions)
• Question-and-answer session (at end of session)

There is a fee for this course and it will be rescheduled if canceled for any reason. If for any reason, the course is canceled by MindWing Concepts (and can NOT be rescheduled), MindWing Concepts, Inc., will notify participants via email and refunds will be issued. If you are ill or there is another emergency and you are not able to attend on these dates, we will transfer your registration for the next available SGM^® Master Class.
