Appropriate For educators working with Pre-K through Grade 5, specifically:
Speech Language Pathologists, Autism Specialists, Psychologists, Literacy Coaches, Reading Specialists, Special Educators, Classroom teachers

Description:
This interactive professional development workshop will focus on Narrative-Based (or Story-based) Intervention, which is needed when students experience difficulties using language to think, communicate and learn. Through the use of narrative development and children’s literature, educators can help childrento: tell their “story,” take perspective, develop Theory of Mind, become critical thinkers, build Central Coherence, solve problems, initiate conversation to establish relationships, understand social emotions, recognize feelings through verbal and nonverbal cues, infer, make plans and improve writing with cohesion.  The multisensory tool, Story Grammar Marker® which provides a concrete representation of the narrative episode will be discussed. The relationship between this methodology and Social Thinking® will be discussed. Narrative intervention is important to all students for developing communicative competence, but especially early learners and those with Autism as well as those who may have social communication, developmental or learning challenges.

Learner Outcomes:
Participants will be able to…

  1. List, define and use the stages of Narrative Development as they relate to both children’s literature and social situations
  2. Use the Critical Thinking Triangle™ for making connections, perspective taking and inference
  3. Foster Theory of Mind and Sentence Complementation (the language needed to communicate ToM)
  4. Support receptive and expressive conversational repair with Six-Second-Stories
  5. Help children to develop executive functions of organization, setting goals, making plans and carrying out the plan
  6. Facilitate problem solving & conflict resolution using MindWing’s Social Problem Solving Model
  7. Aid in building Central Coherence using Cumulative Narrative Chunking™
  8. Help children tune in to feelings and mental states

FREE NEW WEBINAR May 23, 2013 4:00pm (EST)

Maryellen Rooney Moreau, MEd, CCC-SLP, will present: "The Common Core meets Charlotte Cavatica: Strengthening the Web of Connections Between Narrative & Information Text Using Children's Books."

Reading the title of this webinar one might be curious; who is Charlotte Cavatica? This is the name given to one of the main characters in "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White. "Charlotte A. Cavatica" is a barn spider, and the scientific term for barn spider is Araneus cavaticus (Charlotte's middle initial stands for "Aranea"). "Charlotte's Web" is an exemplar text in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) K-5. The author knew a large amount of information about farms, farm animals and spiders which was demonstrated even in his choice of characters names! In this webinar, the presenter will use this text with Story Grammar Marker® and ThemeMaker® methodologies, to demonstrate oral language, critical thinking, perspective-taking, problem solving, argument and opinion. The connections between narrative and information (expository) text will be mapped and discussed, which can assist students in meeting grade-level CCSS.
