MindWing's Story...

The Story Grammar Marker® (the beginning of MindWing’s methodology) was created by Maryellen Rooney Moreau, MEd, CCC-SLP in 1991. At the time, she directed the curriculum at a school for children with dyslexia and language learning disabilities. While working with the children one
day on a writing lesson, the students were given traditional “beginning, middle and end” graphic organizers and were asked to re-tell a story using the graphic organizer to assist them. One little boy approached Maryellen with tears in his eyes and said “I don’t know what to put in my boxes…I never know what to do with my boxes.” Inspired by this interaction and based on years of research and experience on language development as it relates to literacy, Maryellen designed a hands-on, multi-sensory tool to assist this little boy in re-telling his story. It worked for him and has helped thousands of children with varying abilities since then! Maryellen’s passion for helping children to think and communicate has inspired educators across the globe. Over the last 13 years, MindWing has further developed this methodology to improve children’s skills in oral language development, reading comprehension, writing and pragmatics. However, while MindWing’s methodology has continued to evolve, it is recollection of that first little boy’s basic need- to tell his story- that motivated MindWing to entitle our most recent workshop: “There is More to A Story Than Just Beginning, Middle and End…Think Outside the “Boxes!”

Based on over 30 years of research and practice in the areas of language development and communication, Maryellen Rooney Moreau, a Speech Language Pathologist and college professor founded MindWing Concepts in 1994. Since then, MindWing Concepts has gone on to develop a framework that includes instructional materials to help students with speaking, reading comprehension and writing.

Thousands of educators have noted growth and success in areas of Oral Language Development, Reading Comprehension, Social Skills, and Writing by implementing MindWing’s methodology in the classroom. These success stories have been the springboard to many academic projects. Most notably, Haskins Laboratories, a research facility affiliated with Yale University, conducted a United State Department of Education study using MindWing’s methodology which saw success using MindWing's methodology to study literacy acquisition.

Ultimately our success in life is determined by how well we think and communicate.  Children, and adults alike, use oral and written communication to relate cultural experiences, express feelings, experiment with new ideas, and create imaginary scenarios in school and in life.  More and more, oral language development and communication are becoming the focus underlying a child’s ability to tell and retell stories (narrative) and organize information (expository text).  MindWing Concepts provides professional development workshops, instructional materials, classroom demonstrations, and roundtable sessions for parents, educators and administrators.
